England U21 vs Spain U21 LIVE!
England battle Spain in the quarter-finals of the European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia tonight. It’s been far from plain sailing so far for Lee Carsley’s defending champions this summer, with a routine opening win over Czechia followed by a frustrating goalless stalemate with Slovenia and 2-1 defeat by Germany in Group B.
While the Young Lions still made it through to the last eight, they now face a tough test against Spain in a repeat of the Euro 2023 final in Georgia, when Curtis Jones’ goal and a last-gasp penalty save from James Trafford to deny Abel Ruiz secured England their first title for almost 40 years. This time La Roja pipped Italy to top spot in Group A on goals scored following a 1-1 draw between the sides that followed Spain’s opening wins over hosts Slovakia and Romania.
Carsley said he thought his team had “shell-shock” after falling behind so early against Germany and need to make a far quicker start tonight at Anton Malatinsky Stadium in Trnava, with either Portugal or the Netherlands awaiting in the semi-finals in Bratislava on Wednesday. Tino Livramento was a curious absentee from the starting XI against Germany, with natural winger Samuel Illing-Junior given the nod at left-back.
However, Carsley has reverted to type and brought Livramento straight back into the side.
On the right, the Young Lions are spoiled for choice, but it is Jack Hinshelwood, the versatile Brighton man, who continues in the berth despite Archie Gray’s selection there against the Czech Republic and Slovenia.

Carsley’s 4-2-3-1 is set up with the intention of playing in the pockets and in between the lines, particularly when looking at the attacking midfield trident.
Omari Hutchinson, James McAtee, and Harvey Elliott all thrive when given the ball to feet in tight areas, wriggling out of them, and driving towards or into the box looking for a quick one-two or a shooting opportunity.
Tyler Morton comes into the side with the role of orchestrator from deep, keeping the play ticking in possession while breaking things up and shielding the back four, while Alex Scott will have the licence to maraud forwards and crash the box, as he showed against Germany and in the season just gone for Bournemouth.

It’s a first start of the tournament for Jay Stansfield, and what a game to make your bow.
The Birmingham City striker comes in for Jon Rowe, who drops to the bench after his half-time withdrawal against Germany.
How will Stansfield fare?

The Netherlands are into the semi-finals of the U21 European Championships with a narrow 1-0 win over Portugal in Zlina.
Ernest Poku got the decisive goal on 84 minutes to send the young Dutchmen into the last four.
Incoming Chelsea signing Geovany Quenda missed a penalty for the Portuguese in the first-half, while Ruben van Bommel was sent off in the 21st minute for the Dutch after two yellow cards.

... and here is how Santi Denia lines his side up:
Confirmed Spain U21 XI: Iturbe; Pages, Tarrega, Mosquera, Bueno; Guerra, Turrientes; Juanlu, Moleiro, Lopez; Joseph.

The two teams are out, and here is Lee Carsley’s XI:

Carsley’s side have the names and the firepower on paper, but Spain have the form and the cohesion that England just seem to lack at the minute.
Goals also seem to be drying up for the Three Lions, and that could spell trouble.
That said, Spain have not kept a clean sheet all tournament yet, so they can be got at, but do England have enough to disrupt their opponents’ momentum?
Spain to win, 2-1

The Three Lions have been a mixed bag in their title defence so far.
They disappointed in the 2-1 defeat to Germany, but started superbly with a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic on matchday one.
A nervy goalless draw with Slovenia followed, and there is pressure riding on this game now.
Carsley’s 4-2-3-1 shape has stayed consistent throughout, but he is a known tinkerer.
Jon Rowe, the Marseille forward, leads the line, but was hauled off at half-time against Germany, with Birmingham striker Jay Stansfield in his place. Who will start up top tonight?
Harvey Elliott is the leading light of this side, but even he was dragged off at the interval last time out.
Ethan Nwaneri was another that did not survive the full 90 against the Germans, but there is hope that he can repeat the magic moments he produced for Arsenal in the regular season to spur England on here.

Looking at England’s opponents, there are a couple of names that you might recognise from the English top flight.
The first is left-back Hugo Bueno, previously of Wolves, who now plies his trade at Feyenoord, while Mateo Joseph has come through the ranks at Leeds United and was part of Daniel Farke’s Championship title-winning side that won promotion back to the Premier League.
As for those on the continent, centre-back Christian Mosquera is highly-rated at Valencia, while Barcelona’s Pablo Torre, who sports the no10 jersey, is their main creative outlet.
Battling midfielder Javi Guerra is another exciting product from the Valencia youth set-up.

Spain are also at full fitness, with Santi Denia able to pick a settled line-up that has done him well so far.
The Spaniards, who England defeated in the final of this competition two years ago, are unbeaten at this tournament, but their strength in depth means that they have been able to rotate a decent amount to keep their men fresh.
