Manchester City’s completion of a deal for Gianluigi Donnarumma is currently holding back a move for Ederson to Galatasaray, according to new claims.

The Brazilian goalkeeper has faced growing uncertainty over his future throughout the summer, with clubs in Europe keeping close tabs on his availability and Galatasaray having long-emerged as the most advanced suitor.

For Pep Guardiola’s side, the issue of replacing Ederson is not straightforward. The 32-year-old has been a cornerstone of Manchester City’s system since his arrival from Benfica in the summer of 2017, offering both elite shot-stopping and unrivalled distribution that underpins the side’s build-up play.

Any potential successor, therefore, must fit seamlessly into the tactical blueprint – a factor that has seen Gianluigi Donnarumma linked with serious intent, despite the Italian’s reputation as a more traditional shot-stopper.

At the same time, City have been keen to project calmness around the situation. The Premier League giants have stressed their preference to keep Ederson, despite his contract running until 2026.

Now, according to information contained within a wider report from MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, it is highlighted that Manchester City have again made it plain over the last week that they want Ederson to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

In fact, only when that looks ‘inconceivable’ will club officials look for a new goalkeeper. However, the report points towards ‘other sources’ who have suggested a different theory with regards to the situation.

It is claimed that Ederson is actually waiting on Manchester City finalising a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma before joining Galatasaray.

Should such a domino effect take place, it would represent one of the most significant goalkeeping shake-ups in European football. Donnarumma, still only 26, is open to a Premier League switch, while Ederson would be departing England after nine trophy-laden seasons.

Looking ahead, much depends on whether City manage to secure their demands for Ederson from Galatasaray during negotiations that remain ongoing, while Donnarumma’s camp continues to push the idea of England as his next step.

For Manchester City fans, the possibility of a direct swap in stature between Ederson and Donnarumma presents both excitement and a certain level of uncertainty. While the Italian stopper carries immense pedigree, replacing a club icon at the heart of Pep Guardiola’s system would be no small task.
