In the heat of Cincinnati, Mamelodi Sundowns and Borussia Dortmund delivered one of the most entertaining matches of the Club World Cup.

The German side, who were shocked early on and again towards the end, ultimately won 4-3, taking a significant step towards securing their spot in the round of 16.

Dortmund now lead the group with four points, while Sundowns are second with three. Both teams could be overtaken by Fluminense, who play later against Ulsan Hyundai.

The shock and the onslaught

The first strike came from Mamelodi, with a beautiful goal by Lucas Ribeiro. Wearing the colours of the Brazilian national team, the number 10 was inspired, speeding past two defenders and striking firmly past Kobel. Another Brazilian shining in the World Cup.

However, the German team responded quickly. It was just five minutes of South African euphoria until Nmecha, at 15 minutes, equalised by capitalising on a mistake by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who played a poor pass that led to the goal.

The turnaround then came in the 33th minute, with top scorer Serhou Guirassy, who played a one-two with Julian Brandt and appeared in the box to head home making it 2-1.

And, just before the break, Jobe Bellingham scored his first Dortmund goal after capitalising on a deflection off the goalkeeper and another deflection off the defence.

The South African side battled back in the second half, but suffered another goal first when Daniel Svensson attempted a cross and the ball deflected off Khuliso Mudau to beat goalkeeper Williams, who could do nothing to prevent the fourth goal conceded.

But things didn't stop there, and three minutes later, Iqraam Rayners scored after two attempts – the first again hitting the post and the rebound finally finding the net.

And it still wasn't over, as the South Africans were not ready to give up. In the 89th minute of the second half, Kutlwano Lethalaku took advantage to steal the ball and set up Lebo Mothiba who scored Sundowns' third goal.

There wasn't enough time for Sundowns to grab an equaliser but they gave Dortmund a far bigger scare than expected.
