Dominican Republic in search of first Gold Cup win against Suriname

MIAMI — The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup continues with the Dominican Republic and Suriname meeting in Group A on Sunday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The two nations will seek their first victory of the campaign as they are unable to advance to the Knockout Stage.
Dominican Republic seeks first Gold Cup victory
The Dominican Republic will seek to complete its debut campaign with its first Gold Cup victory.
Los Quisqueyanos fought valiantly in a comeback effort that fell short against the defending champions, losing 3-2 in the tournament opening match. Peter González and Edison Azcona scored the goals in that encounter.
João Urbáez placed the Dominican Republic in the lead in its 2-1 loss to Costa Rica. Xavier Valdez has nine saves across two matches and will seek to earn his first clean sheet.
Suriname seeks to exit with second Gold Cup victory
Suriname will seek to exit the 2025 edition with a victory and its second in tournament history.
Gyrano Kerk and Richonell Margaret combined to spur a Suriname comeback effort in the nation’s opening match with Costa Rica. A Shaquille Pinas penalty kick conversion put Suriname in the lead before Los Ticos would salvage a 4-3 victory in stoppage time.
Goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen has nine saves for Suriname, with four in the 2-nil loss against Mexico last Wednesday.
All-Time series Suriname v. Dominican Republic –
Suriname and the Dominican Republic are set to face each other for the first time ever in the Concacaf Gold Cup. Their only previous encounters came during FIFA World Cup Qualifying over a decade ago, with the last meeting taking place nearly 14 years ago.
Their first showdown occurred on September 6, 2011, in Group 1 of the Concacaf qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The match at Estadio Panamericano in San Cristóbal ended in a 1-1 draw. Friso Mando gave Suriname the lead with a penalty in the 25th minute, but Erick Ozuna equalized for the Dominican Republic in the 68th.
Just over a month later, on October 11, 2011, the sides met again at André Kamperveen Stadium in Paramaribo. This time, the Dominican Republic came out on top with a 3-1 win. Jonathan Fariña opened the scoring in the 9th minute, and Ozuna added two more (47’, 76’) to become the Dominican Republic’s top scorer in those qualifiers. Naldo Kwasie netted the lone goal for Suriname in the 81st minute.
