Portugal will pay their respects to Diogo Jota and his brother during match against Spain at the Women’s Euros
A minute's silence will be held before Portugal face Spain at the Women’s Euros tonight in tribute to Diogo Jota.
Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, who played for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel, have died following a car crash in Spain early on Thursday.
The crash happened just after midnight on Thursday morning on the A-52, close to Spain's north-west border with Portugal.
The Liverpool star and his brother were in a Lamborghini at the time of the crash. A tyre is believed to have blown out while overtaking, causing the car to come off the road, crash and burst into flames.
Jota played an important role in helping Liverpool win the Premier League title last season. He also won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup with the Merseyside club having arrived from Wolves in 2020.
He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club across all competitions and also earned 49 caps for Portugal.
Last month he celebrated winning the Nations League for the second time as Portugal beat Spain in a penalty shootout.
The women’s team begin their Euro 2025 campaign with a Group B match against Spain in the Swiss capital of Bern on Thursday evening and a minute's silence will take place before kick-off to remember Jota and his brother.
UEFA have confirmed that a minute’s silence will be held at all Women’s Euro 2025 games on Thursday and Friday, including Belgium vs Italy, Denmark vs Sweden and Germany vs Poland.
“UEFA announces that a moment of silence will be observed at all of today’s and tomorrow’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 matches in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva who tragically passed away today,” said European football’s governing body.
An initial statement from the Portuguese Football Federation read: “The Portuguese Football Federation has already asked UEFA for a minute's silence this Thursday, before our team's match against Spain in the Women's European Championship.
“We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and André Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day.”
