Few players in the history of football have had an impact as immense as the one that Lionel Messi has had on FC Barcelona. Universally seen as the greatest player to ever represent the club, he helped the Catalan giants achieve massive success. However, even at Barcelona certain complications did pile up for the Argentine.
From rumors about his salary to his relationship with certain players, the media never seemed to let go of their understanding that things could not simply be perfect at Barça. However, a certain captain of the Catalan club has recently confessed to the fact that he did have a complicated relationship with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
German goalkeeper and Barcelona captain Marc-Andre Ter Stegen recently spoke about his complicated understanding with Messi in the past, and confessed that they did not always get along with each other, as quoted by Barça Times:
“I have a lot of respect for Messi, but there were times when me and him didn’t get along and our relationship wasn’t the best. Sometimes, it was because of me, sometimes because of him.”
This is definitely major news, and it does confirm the fact that they both did share a rocky friendship it seems. Both players have represented Barcelona for a long time, and they even won the continental treble for the club back in 2015 together.
Despite having stayed teammates until Messi’s eventual departure to France, it seems that both of the veterans definitely seemed to have their differences. However, as the German player did not elaborate further, not too much can be said on why exactly why both players had issues.
As of right now, Messi is playing for Inter Miami over in the United States of America, and Ter Stegen is working on his recovery at Barcelona. Despite having gone their separate ways, it is at least nice to hear that Ter Stegen still maintains a level of respect for the Barcelona legend.
