Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio says that he has strong ambitions to play for the Italy national team in the future, but does not picture himself being called up to the squad for Euro 2024, as the group ‘is already done’.

The highly-rated 26-year-old gave an in-depth interview to La Stampa ahead of Monza’s trip to Torino in Serie A, where he discussed his personal progress and his hopes of turning out for the Nazionale.

Despite an impressive start to life in the Italian top flight since Monza’s promotion in 2022, Di Gregorio believes that a call-up to Luciano Spalletti’s squad for Euro 2024 this summer is likely one tournament too soon.

“I hope to get into the national team, but after the European Championships,” Di Gregorio said, reported via TMW.

“The group is done for now. I don’t want to experience it badly, I want to do it in the right way. I still have the desire, it’s like a dream,” he added.

The competition in Spalletti’s goalkeeping department is perhaps the most healthy in the Italy squad in 2024.

Gianluigi Donnarumma remains the no.1, having already captained the Azzurri on 12 occasions at the age of 25.

Guglielmo Vicario was tipped as one of the bargains of the Premier League season in the early stages of the 2023-24 campaign, while last season’s , Ivan Provedel, and the 2022-23 Scudetto winner, Alex Meret, are also pushing for a spot in the squad this summer.
