FC Barcelona had one major transfer saga to handle earlier in the January transfer window with it seeming like Ronald Araujo was almost on his way to Juventus only for him to perform a U-turn and sign a new contract with the Catalan club.
One of the major talking points when Araujo signed a new contract was the non-disclosure of the release clause in his new deal. Barcelona had made it a habit to announce the clause during previous seasons and this raised some concern.
Now, as per MARCA, Ronald Araujo has an interesting release clause in his new contract at Barcelona. The Uruguayan’s new release clause stands at €1 billion, normally, much like how his previous contract with the club was.
However, in the first ten days of July in the upcoming transfer window, the release clause briefly drops to €70 million. This is only for the summer of 2025 and it would not be for the upcoming years of his contract that runs until 2031.
This gives Araujo the control to decide his future in the upcoming summer, should any club be interested in signing him. It would also mean that Barcelona get a significant chunk of money from the sale if he does decide to leave.
There is a good chance that Deco trades these 10 days of a reduced release clause next summer in exchange for an additional year in his contract, explaining why he has a deal until 2031, unlike Pedri and Gavi who have it until 2030.
Araujo is a club captain at Barcelona and everyone is hoping that he stays at the club for a long time. However, it is evident that there is something that is concerning him still and it remains to be seen what the future holds for him.
A low release clause is never good news, as Barcelona know all too well with the Dembele saga but that is a conversation for a different day. It remains to be seen if Araujo pushes for a move away from the club next summer but for now, it’s time to focus on matters on the pitch.
