RB Leipzig have won just one of their last seven Bundesliga games, which has allowed Freiburg and Mainz to overtake the Saxony club in the race for the final Champions League spot with 11 games remaining. Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s DFB Pokal tie against Wolfsburg, Marco Rose spoke on the current situation, which he analysed in detail.
“We’re not playing out of our depth at the moment,” said Rose. “It’s clear that criticism will come up and questions will arise. The boys want it, and the coaching team has to provide a solution. The mind plays a big role. Now it’s my job as a coach to find starting points and create conviction, similar to how we managed to do very, very well against Frankfurt.”
With a place in the German Cup semi-final very much a possibility, Rose believes that Leipzig can find their spark again. “I believe that we can still make it a successful season.
“If I didn’t believe in it, I wouldn’t be sitting here anymore.”
Should Leipzig be eliminated from the Pokal on Wednesday night, questions will certainly be asked. Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß has been identified as a potential replacement for Rose as the latter’s future at Red Bull becomes more uncertain.
Leipzig come into their game against Wolfsburg after a 2-2 draw against Heidenheim in the Bundesliga on Sunday, but an underwhelming performance saw the Saxony club 2-0 inside 13 minutes before goals from Lois Openda and Benjamin Sesko either side of the break secured a point for Rose’s side.
