After spending a week and a half away from the group during the start of the 2025/26 pre-season, Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen announced on Thursday that he will undergo surgery to resolve his ongoing back issues.
In an unusual move, the German goalkeeper issued his own statement, even before the club made an official announcement, stating that he expects to be out for “around three weeks.”
Later on, Barcelona did confirm in their statement that the surgery on Ter Stegen will take place “next week” and will be performed by Dr Amelie Leglise under the supervision of the club’s medical staff at Sports Clinic Bordeaux Merignac.
Now, according to SPORT, Ter Stegen’s operation is scheduled for Tuesday, 29 July. Barcelona to issue an updated statement once the procedure has been completed.

After doctors have examined the affected area and performed the necessary intervention, Barcelona will be able to provide a specific prognosis, which may be made public if the player consents.
Internally, the Blaugrana believe that Ter Stegen’s recovery time will be longer than the three months he mentioned in his statement, but have not publicly commented on it.
Regardless of the recovery timelines proposed by either the club or the player, it will ultimately be La Liga – upon receiving all relevant medical reports and through its independent Medical Commission – that determines the official severity of the injury.
Only then will it be decided whether Barcelona can use 80% of Ter Stegen’s salary to register Joan Garcia or another player.
