Context is everything for Newcastle United after this Stamford Bridge defeat

It ended Chelsea 2 Newcastle 1 for Newcastle United today.

Defeat at Stamford Bridge not a new things for our travelling fans to witness.

It was a loss though that needs to be seen in context.

If Eddie Howe’s side had taken the plentiful should have scored chances they had against Everton and Brighton, then this loss would have been seen as one of those things.

A match where there was gifting possession and chances through sloppy play, mixed with quality at other times, from both sides.

A disappointing loss BUT not some kind of disaster that is portrayed by so many Newcastle United fans today.

The problem is that it is now bundled into a run of five Premier League matches that have seen three defeats and two draws.

When the reality for me is that none of these last four matches against Man City, Everton, Brighton and Chelsea have been poor performances. Just ones that have seen Newcastle guilty of poor finishing and individual mistakes at times, with so much of the play very decent a lot of the time.

There is also another angle when it comes to this Chelsea 2 Newcastle 1 result and context.

Just look at the other results this weekend.

Tottenham lose to Palace who hadn’t won a single PL match before today.

Man U losing yet again, this time in added time to West Ham.

Brighton leading 2-0 at home but only drawing 2-2 against a Wolves side who haven’t won a single PL game this season.

Aston Villa leading at home but only drawing 1-1 as Bournemouth scored in added time.

Even Man City struggling to a 1-0 home win over bottom of the table Southampton who had chances.

I just don’t think it is fair to go too overboard after today’s defeat to Chelsea. It wasn’t terrible and there were a lot of positives to Newcastle’s play, I just think that as well as the negatives that there were to the NUFC today, they just look a team in need of our support and to get the breaks where they have a big win that can see the confidence and momentum flood back.

No better time for that than Wednesday, against… Chelsea.
