Several FC Barcelona players are currently on international duty, including Lamine Yamal, who is representing Spain in the UEFA Nations League. Last night, La Roja faced Denmark and secured a 1-0 victory, with the winning goal coming from Martin Zubimendi.

As has often been the case this season, when teams have struggled to contain Lamine Yamal, opponents have resorted to rough tactics to slow him down. This was evident once again last night, as the 17-year-old was repeatedly targeted with fouls throughout the match by Morten Wieghorst’s side.

Furthermore, as highlighted by SPORT, Lamine Yamal was seen limping after the match, sparking concern in Catalonia. However, his discomfort is not expected to lead to any serious issues. The Spanish Football Federation has no plans to conduct medical tests at this time, as they believe there is no significant injury.

The reports further noted that Spain’s head coach, De La Fuente, was also asked about the rough treatment Lamine Yamal received during the game against Denmark. However, the coach played down the issue, placing responsibility on the referees. Here’s what he had to say:

“That’s how football is, you have to play with the toughness allowed by the rules. Football is football, and everyone uses their own tactics. It’s the referee’s job to set the limits.”

“It’s about intimidation, seeking contact… That’s what they aim to do with such young and talented players. The referees are the ones who need to draw the line, but he’ll have to get used to it.”

Before the match, De La Fuente also heaped praise on Yamal, suggesting that he possesses a divine spark, with his performances this season fully justifying that label.

With five goals and five assists in 11 games across all competitions, Lamine has been one of Hansi Flick’s most important players. The German coach has brought the best out of not just the 17-year-old but also his attacking partners like Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.

Next up, Spain are set to face Serbia in the Nations League. In all likelihood, Lamine Yamal might and should be rested for the game, from the start. The 17-year-old has played non-stop for club and country and the rest will be much deserved.

Luis de la Fuente has a number of players who can play on the right wing and it is the responsibility of the Spanish head coach to protect one of his country’s biggest talents. The onus just cannot be on Barcelona to develop him into a superstar.

It remains to be seen how Lamine Yamal shapes up in the coming days after quite a physical test against Denmark. Barcelona will want him to be in top shape against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid and let’s see how he fares in the bigger tests that lie ahead.
