Serhou Guirassy netted three times in Borussia Dortmund’s win over Barcelona last night, and it served as a reminder to the AC Milan management.

As Calciomercato.com recall, Dortmund got a 3-1 win over Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, but it wasn’t enough as the Catalan side had won the first leg 4-0 to put themselves in a great position.

Guirassy got a hat-trick against Hansi Flick’s men at the Signal Iduna Park, a signal to the elite of European and world football. He is now on 13 Champions League goals, meaning he overtook Raphinha in the scoring table, though BVB’s journey is now over so he may not stay there.

The 29-year-old has performed better than all those who have worn the Borussia Dortmund shirt, including Haaland, and no African has ever scored as many as him in a single edition of the Champions League.

After 30 goals in 30 games with Stuttgart last year, the striker has now reached 28 – plus nine assists – in 40 games played this season. It is a season in which he has also often been sidelined due to some physical problems, too.

The Guinean will also be talked about in a few months alongside the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Osimhen and Alexander Isak as the potential big moves. A little less than a year ago, Dortmund signed him for just €17.5m, the value of his release clause.

There was Milan on his trail at the time too, who were already very close to signing him in January 2024. The deal was then postponed to the summer when Guirassy went behind Joshua Zirkzee in the list of preferences.

The the Dutchman went to Manchester United, so Milan decided to focus on the experience of Alvaro Morata, fresh from the European Championships as captain and protagonist with Spain. The epilogue of the story between the Spaniard and Milan is known to all, as he left in January.

Nonetheless, the Rossoneri spent €13m to sign him, then six months later shelled out €32m for Santiago Gimenez, now also in the dock. The role of Milan’s No.9 continues to be a taboo, and to think that the solution could have been within reach and cost only €17.5m.
