African clubs bowed out early from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup group stage, following Wednesday's elimination of Mamelodi Sundowns. The South African side was held to a goalless draw (0-0) by Brazil's Fluminense on the final matchday in Group F.With this result, Sundowns joined the list of eliminated African clubs, alongside Al Ahly (Egypt), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), and Espérance de Tunis. No African representative managed to reach the round of 16.
Despite their early exit, Mamelodi Sundowns departed the tournament with record revenues, totaling $12.55 million. This sum includes a $9.55 million participation bonus, $2 million for a group-stage victory, and an additional $1 million for the draw against Fluminense.Sundowns finished third in their group, behind Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense, with 4 points—outpacing Ulsan Hyundai (South Korea), who finished bottom with zero points.
Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Al Ahly each exited the competition with $11.55 million, corresponding to the participation bonus and one group-stage victory.Wydad Casablanca, meanwhile, has so far collected only the $9.55 million participation bonus, pending the outcome of their play-off for placement against Al Ain (United Arab Emirates). A win there would also bring them up to the $11.55 million mark.
