  • From: Milan, Italy
  • How They Qualified: They slipped in via the UEFA ranking pathway based on Champions League performances over four seasons.
  • Best CWC Finish: Inter Milan were champions way back in 2010. This will be their second appearance.
  • Recent Form: Ooh… it’s been so very painful. Inter Milan lost the Scudetto on the final match day after losing three of their previous five games. They were completely trounced by PSG in the Champions League by a record-breaking final score of 5 – 0. Eliminated from the Coppa Italia by AC Milan.
  • Facts:  Founded in 1908 when it split from AC Milan.  They have the highest attendance of any Italian club.  They are the only Italian club to win a seasonal treble (comprising the Scudetto, Coppa Italia and Champions League). They also won the Club World Cup that same year.  Only 27% of the team are Italian. There are 13 different nationalities on the team.

The Team

  • Manager: Cristian Chivu Replaced Simone Inzaghi recently, though not clear he will be the permanent manager moving forward.
  • Star Players: If there’s one thing this team does NOT lock, it’s start power. Here is a partial list of their talent: Lautaro Martínez (ARG), Nicolò Barella (ITA), Marcus Thuram (FRA), Marko Atnautović (AUT), Denzel Dumfries (NED), Yann Sommer (CH)
  • Young Players: Petar Sučić 21 year-old Croatian midfielder with 7g/3a in 32 games. Valentín Carboni 20 year-old Argentinian attacking midfielder. Only played 100 minutes all season Yann Bisseck 24 year-old German center-back.
  • Training Sites: UCLA, Los Angeles, California Seattle Seahawks Training Center, Renton, Washington

The Hooligan Take

Inter’s season can be summarized in one word: disaster. On May 7th they were still atop the Serie A and had just knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League. The future was bright. Four weeks later and Inter had nothing but air and regrets. Going from a potential two trophies to zero was apparently too much humiliation for the club to bear, and manager Simone Inzaghi was sacked last week. Newly appointed gaffer, Romanian Cristian Chivu, who managed Parma last season, had best hope the team clears the group stage or it could be a short stint.
