We have had some big news around the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup including key dates, who will be hosting and how the tournament will be run, and we can reveal all the latest information.
Real Madrid are the current holders of this prestigious trophy, and we do typically see the UEFA Champions League holders win this competition.
European clubs have won it for the last ten years and this doesn't look to be changing anytime soon. The four clubs to win the Club World Cup outside of Europe have all been from Brazil.
To be able to win another trophy and be crowned the club champions of the world is a huge achievement and no doubt teams are already looking forward to the tournament in 2023.
It has been revealed by The Athletic that Asian country Saudi Arabia will be hosting the tournament. This is no shock as the country are also trying to host one of the future World Cups in their bid to bring the best footballing talent to their nation.
Federico Valverde of Real Madrid poses with the FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2022 Adidas Silver Ball Award, Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid poses with the FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2022 Adidas Golden Ball Award and Luciano Vietto of Al Hihal poses with the FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2022 Adidas Bronze Ball Award after the FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2022 Final match between Real Madrid and Al Hilal at Prince Moulay Abdellah on February 11, 2023 in Rabat, Morocco.
The 2022 Club World Cup had to be played at a later date due to the fact that we had the World Cup in December 2022; however, the 2023 Club World Cup can return to its normal schedule. It will start on the 12th of December 2023 and end on the 22nd of December 2023.
The current format sees the winners of the AFC Champions League, CAF Champions League, CONCACAF Champions League, CONMEBOL Libertadores, OFC Champions League, UEFA Champions League and the host nation's national champions all compete in a knockout competition. These are all the biggest football club tournaments in every continent, and it is the only time we see clubs play teams from other continents competitively.
This format will change from 2025, as FIFA will be aiming to create a bigger tournament which is more competitive, and we will see 32 teams take part instead of eight.
Football fans will be able to attend the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia; however, tickets for these matches are not available yet. You will have to wait until a lot closer to December 2023 to purchase tickets for this competition.
