Fabrizio Romano confirmed this week that one Manchester United star is ‘exploring his options’ ahead of a summer Old Trafford exit.

Unsurprisingly, the player in question is Christian Eriksen, as he is one of four players seeing out the final four months of their contracts at the club.

The seasoned veteran will then become a free agent upon the culmination of the campaign – having also joined United on a free when his six-month deal with Brentford expired in 2022.

It remains to be seen where Eriksen will take his exploits next. He has enjoyed successful stints in the Premier League, Eredivisie and Serie A throughout his senior career but has yet to represent a club in his native Denmark since leaving Odense Boldklub’s academy for Ajax’s in 2008.

Now 33 years old, the 140-capped Dane has likely recognised that the demands of the English top flight are becoming too gruelling for him to keep up with – as is the case in most of Europe’s top leagues. As such, he may look to ply his trade in a quieter division now as he closes in on the final years of his career.

Eriksen tipped for Denmark return as club verifies ‘dialogue’

In line with that, his former youth club OB has been outlined as a plausible destination for Eriksen after he leaves the Red Devils – so much so that TV2 Sport contacted the side’s Sporting Director, Troels Bech, to gauge the likelihood of the transfer coming to fruition.

“If you hope to stand and be able to break something about Christian Eriksen and OB right now, it is both out of my hands and maybe also a little bit ambitious…” he said.

“He’s, of course, a dear friend of the club, and we have just organised the Christian Eriksen Cup with his great approval, so he is a player who means more than just a shirt number and 90 minutes for OB.”

When asked if they’ve engaged in talks with Eriksen regarding a potential return, Bech responded: “There’s dialogue. Most recently, he has also helped us with video and other things for the Christian Eriksen Cup. But it’s not my privilege to stand and talk about contract talks. That’s not the dialogue we have with Christian Eriksen right now.”
