Alex Greenwood is one of six City players called up to represent England at the upcoming World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
And in anticipation of the tournament – which begins on 20 July – we bring you this miniseries on our stars featuring in the prestigious tournament.
After a consistent season in Gareth Taylor’s defensive line, playing an integral role in our 14-game unbeaten run in the Women’s Super League, Sarina Wiegman has called upon the 29-year-old as one her 23-player squad.
Learn more about Greenwood and what to expect from her on the international stage below…
Greenwood has become an exemplary figurehead for City in recent years, providing experience and composure in our backline throughout her 98 appearances for the Club.
The defender, who can be deployed in the full-back role, leads by example with her playstyle and composure on the ball.
Her dead-ball ability is also second-to-none. She is called upon regularly for corners and free-kicks because of her reliability to put the ball into dangerous areas.
The England international can play penetrating long passes from within City’s half and through the opposition’s defenders, opening up play and creating high-scoring opportunities for her team-mates.
Opposite to that, Greenwood can also drive forward with the ball from deep, flaunting her dribbling finesse and forcing an opposing player to attempt to close the ball down and in turn create more space for her compatriots.
Since her England debut against Italy in March 2014, Greenwood has gone on to make 74 senior caps and has scored five goals.
Her first taste of tournament experience came in the 2014 Cyprus Cup before being selected as the youngest member of the 2015 World Cup squad. Greenwood was deployed at left-back throughout the tournament as England won the bronze medal.
Greenwood’s first appearance at the European Championships came at the 2017 tournament in Holland where England were knocked out in the semi-finals by the hosts.
In 2019, Greenwood travelled to France with the squad for the World Cup where England narrowly missed out on another third-place finish.
With England continuously proving to be a threat for tournament favourites in both competitions, hosting the 2022 Euros gave Wiegman’s side the upper hand.
Greenwood featured in five of England’s games in their journey to being crowned European champions last summer.
The defender has also been part of other trophy-winning moments, including the 2019 SheBelieves Cup, the 2022 and 2023 Arnold Clark Cup triumphs and the 2023 Finalissima.
One of the most experienced England players at Wiegman’s disposal this summer, Greenwood will undoubtedly play a big role in England’s games on and off the pitch.
Before jetting off to the other side of the globe, England will host Portugal in a friendly at MK Dons on Saturday 1 July, with kick-off scheduled for 15:15 (UK).
They begin their World Cup journey against Haiti on Saturday 22 July, which will kick-off at 10:30 (UK).
In their second game of Group D, Sarina Wiegman’s team will battle it out against Denmark on Friday 28 July at 09:30 (UK).
They will top off their group games against China at 12:00 (UK) on Saturday 1 August.
