Over the course of a hugely impressive career to date, the Italian has gone on to establish a reputation for being one of the finest goalkeepers operating in the European game.

A tall, commanding and imposing presence standing at 6ft 5ins, Donnarumma arrives at the Etihad armed with a wealth of elite-level experience.

He established his career with Italian giants AC Milan where, after progressing through their youth ranks and making his senior debut as a 16-year-old, he went on to make more than 250 appearances in total, helping Milan to lift the 2016 Italian Super Coppa.

Donnarumma then made the move across Europe to France in the summer of 2021 to further his career development, opting to join Paris Saint-Germain where he made an immediate and sustained impact.

Over the course of four seasons at the Parc des Princes, Donnarumma went on to help PSG claim a quartet of Ligue One crowns, two Coupe de France successes as well as a hat-trick of Trophee des Champions titles.

His stay in the French capital was then crowned in May of this year when he helped PSG claim a maiden UEFA Champions League title with Luis Enrique’s side beating Internazionale 5-0 in hugely impressive fashion.

Donnarumma’s influence and impact has been equally impressive on the international stage too.

His heroics in a dramatic penalty shoot-out memorably helped Italy beat England at Wembley 3-2 on penalties to claim EURO 2020 with Donnarumma also voted the Player of the Tournament.

“To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me,” said Donnarumma.

“I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by the one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player in world football would love to join.

“I have admired watching Manchester City for many years - so to now be able to play for the Club is a huge honour and a privilege.

“I cannot wait to meet my new teammates, the staff and the fans. Playing at the Etihad Stadium will be very, very special for me.

“I am very excited for what lies ahead and can promise that I will give absolutely everything to try and help the Club achieve even more success.”

For his part, Director of Football Hugo Viana said Donnarumma’s arrival represented a huge boost to everyone at the Etihad.

“Gianluigi’s pedigree, quality and record speaks for itself, and we are all absolutely thrilled he has joined us here at City,” said Viana.

“He has accumulated a wealth of top-level experience and knows what is required to achieve success on a sustained level.

“From a remarkably young age, he has played at the very top level. That is unusual for a goalkeeper and it means he arrives here as one of the best in the world in his position.

“There is no doubt Gianluigi will bring further quality and depth to our top-class goalkeeping department.

“Everyone here is very excited to welcome Gianluigi to Manchester City and we wish him all the very best during his time here with us.”

A commanding presence

At 6ft 5ins in height, his sheer size and physical presence means it’s difficult to ignore Gianluigi Donnarumma whenever he takes to the field.

But it’s his all-round quality, powerful athleticism, razor-sharp reflexes and enduring consistency that have helped marked the Italian goalkeeper out as one of the most commanding number ones to have emerged in the European game this past decade.

His CV alone makes for impressive and compelling reading.

Having been brought up through AC Milan’s prestigious Academy, Donnarumma made a dramatic and early breakthrough into Milan’s senior ranks.

He was afforded a senior debut in 2015, making his first team bow at the age of just 16 years and 342 days, in the process becoming the second-youngest goalkeeper ever to feature in Serie A.

Quickly establishing himself in AC’s senior set-up, Donnarumma immediately illustrated that he was there on merit, going on to thrive in one of the most competitive and intense environments in European football where his stature and technical prowess marked him out as a special talent.

Amidst the challenging backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020/21 season saw Donnarumma help Milan to a second-paced finish in Serie A and with it claim a return back to the Champions League after an eight-year absence.

That same term also saw him named as Serie A’s Best Goalkeeper of the Year.

However, the summer of 2021 saw Donnarumma opt to embark on a new challenge as he decided to switch both clubs and country, making the move from Milan to the French capital as he joined Paris Saint-Germain.

Appropriately enough, he marked his PSG debut against Clermont by recording a clean sheet in a 4-0 victory, a win that would presage what would become an enormously successful four-year stay in the French capital.

Donnarumma’s maiden season saw him help PSG claim the Ligue One crown whilst on an individual level his class and consistency saw him become the recipient of the prestigious Yashin Trophy at the 2021 Ballon d’Or awards, a coveted prize presented to the best performing goalkeeper of that year.

It was the prelude to a period of sustained success both for club and player. Donnarumma emerging as a key cornerstone of an all-conquering PSG side that went on to secure four straight French league titles along with two Coupe de France successes and a hat-trick of Trophee des Champions titles.

However, the apogee of Donnarumma’s time at the Parc des Princes came in May of this year when he was part of the Paris Saint-Germain side that ended the club’s long quest to be crowned European champions.

PSG claimed a memorable maiden UEFA Champions League crown in emphatic style thanks to a 5-0 win over Internazionale in the final at Munich’s Allianz Arena.

Donnarumma played a seismic role in PSG’s route to the final, his two key penalty shoot-outs proving pivotal in helping Luis Enrique’s side knock out Liverpool 4-1 on penalties in the round of 16 before PSG then also dismissed fellow English sides Aston Villa and Arsenal in the quarter and semi-finals.

The Italian’s impact and career arc has been equally eye-catching and influential on the international stage too.

At just 17 years and 189 days old, Donnarumma became the youngest goalkeeper ever to play for Italy when coming on to make his debut as a second half substitute against France in a friendly in September 2016.

The following March saw Donnarumma make his first start on the international stage in a 2-1 win away to the Netherlands, where at the age of 18 years and 31 days he became the youngest goalkeeper to achieve that feat.

Donnuramma’s international high point to date came in the summer of 2021 when yet more penalty shoot-out heroics saw him help Italy claim the EURO 2020 title.

Firstly, his defining save from Alvaro Morata help pilot Italy to a 4-2 semi-final penalty shootout win over Spain after the sides had drawn 1-1 over 120 minutes.

That was then followed by two more memorable penalty shoot-out saves in the final itself against England at Wembley, which saw Roberto Mancini’s side record a dramatic 3-2 triumph over the Three Lions after the sides had been deadlocked at 1-1 in normal and extra time.

His heroics throughout the showpiece also saw him named Player of the Tournament by UEFA – the first time the prestigious award had ever been presented to a goalkeeper.

In total, Donnarumma has amassed 76 caps to date.

Now at the age of just 26, he is set to embark on what promises to be the most exciting chapter of his career to date as part of Pep Guardiola’s exciting City squad.
