The inaugural World Sevens Football tournament is just one week away!
City are set to compete with seven other sides across a three-day tournament in Portugal between Wednesday 21 and Friday 23 May.
It promises to be an exciting, fast-paced competition between some of Europe’s heavyweight sides, with Estoril, Lisbon providing a stunning backdrop.
Find out all the key information around the World Sevens below…
The Blues will face Rosengard, Ajax and Bayern Munich in Group 1 at the World Sevens.
Rosengard have won three of the last four Swedish top flight titles, with current City defender Rebecca Knaak joining the Blues from them in January 2025.
A few months prior, our Director of Football Therese Sjogran, who spent almost a decade in a similar role at the Swedish champions, also joined the Blues from Rosengard last year.
Ajax, meanwhile, are set for a third-place finish in the Dutch top flight, most recently winning the Eredivisie in 2023 and the domestic cup the following season.
Bayern Munich come into the World Sevens on the back of a domestic double, claiming the title for a third season in a row in the process. Former City midfielder Georgia Stanway has been central to that success as she continues her recovery from a knee injury sustained in January 2025.
Group 2 is made up of AS Roma, Benfica, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. Should we progress from the group, we will face one of them in the knockout stages.
City will take part in the opening fixture of the tournament on Wednesday 21 May against Rosengard, with kick-off set for 17:00 (UK).
Our other two group stage fixtures take place the following day at 13:30 against Ajax and 18:30 against Bayern Munich respectively.
The semi-finals, should we progress, are slated for Friday 23 May. If we were to win our group, then the last four fixture would kick-off at 15:00 against the Group 2 runner up. If we finish second, we'd face the winners of the other group at 16:30.
The third-place play-off will get under way at 18:30 on Friday 23 May, with the final taking place at 20:00.
Each match will run for 30 minutes in total, split into two 15-minute halves with a five-minute half-time break.
Due to the smaller number of players, the pitch size will be reduced and there will be no offsides, but throw-ins will remain as normal.
There will also be rolling substitutions available, with no limit on the amount that can be made in each game.
Should the match finish level at the end of 30 minutes, then an additional five minutes of extra time will be played to determine a winner.
Both teams will be reduced to five players during that extra time period, with the game over as soon as one of the two sides score in a 'golden goal' format.
If they still can’t be separated after that extra time period, then sudden death penalties will be used to determine the winners.
