Chelsea have won a fifth consecutive Barclays Women’s Super League title after cruising to a 6-0 victory over a poor Manchester United side at Old Trafford this afternoon.

The Blues needed to match Manchester City’s result against Aston Villa and ensure that a positive goal difference of two wasn’t wiped out. As the action unfolded, Emma Hayes’ side were never in any danger of letting their grip slip, establishing a 4-0 first half lead and continuing their dominance in the second period.

Chelsea got off to the best possible start, breaking the deadlock inside two minutes. Guro Reiten was given far too much space on the left and she delivered a cross which was headed home by Mayra Ramírez.

It was soon 2-0 to The Blues. Ramírez slotted in Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and she nudged the ball beyond home keeper Mary Earps and into the far corner of the net.

Jayde Riviere then slid in to deny Chelsea a third goal before Maya Le Tissier saw a header cannon off the crossbar at the other end from one of Manchester United’s few attacks.

Chelsea did net their third just before half-time. The Manchester United defence folded far too easily as Ramírez powered her way through and she teed up Sjoeke Nüsken to score. The Colombian then completed her brace as she again bamboozled opposing defenders and fired the ball into the far corner of the net.

The South West Londoners started the second half in exactly the same manner. Rytting Kaneryd’s shot was saved by Earps and Reiten then hit the post from the rebound before the ball was delivered to Melanie Leupolz who scored from 12 yards.

The fifth goal knocked any remaining intensity out of the contest but Chelsea were still able to add to their lead late in the game. Substitute Fran Kirby was played through on goal and she expertly beat Earps, the England international delivering a gift to her adoring fans.

This afternoon’s result sees Chelsea win the Barclays Women’s Super League title on goal difference after title rivals Manchester City defeated Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park.
