Chelsea “seriously consider” elite option in key position – and we pray they make it happen

From the moment that Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa stepped up to save his third consecutive penalty in the shootout of his country’s last 16 game against Slovenia on Monday night, we knew this was coming.

Chelsea have been linked with a number of goalkeepers this summer, with Costa at the top of the list in terms of current ability (and price, most likely). So the moment he made major headlines it felt inevitable that these rumours would be fired up again shortly afterwards.

In this case, it’s sources in Spain which are leading the way, with transfer reporting outlet Fichajes claiming that the Blues are “already seriously considering” signing Portugal and Porto’s first choice stopper.

It won’t be easy – and it may not be possible at all. He’s got three years left on his deal with Porto, his agent is Jorge Mendes and a host of top sides are interested, especially after Monday night’s heroics. We could be looking at a record fee for a goalkeeper, or something close to it. But plenty of people would say it’s worth it for a 24 year old who can still get better, and could end up being your first choice keeper for ten years or more if all goes well.

Sanchez to stick in goal

These links do of course contradict the chatter of the last 24 hours, as reported by our writer Simon Phillips, that Chelsea are considering just letting Robert Sanchez return to being first choice and seeing how he gets on under Enzo Maresca.

We can only see that going terribly wrong, and given how much we’ve suffered from not having a top goalkeeper in the last few years, we’re praying that the club do break the bank and go for someone top tier like Costa.
