Chelsea are monitoring the centre back market right now but any new signing would need a current option being sold.
It’s always been very obvious to me that Chelsea will obviously be taking a look around at centre back options after the injury to Levi Colwill, who is expected to miss the majority of the season now.
But the issue is that Chelsea need to make sales to make sure they stay in line with FFP and FIFA fines. Any new centre back that comes in will need one current option in the first team to be sold, and that now looks very unlikely.
Chelsea have just agreed a deal to sell one defender, Renato Veiga, to Villarreal this window, but they are likely to need more than that.
Selling Axel Disasi as well could help but might still not be enough. Bournemouth have come in for him late in the window but it still looks like just a loan offer so that doesn’t help anything.
So Chelsea could be forced to just go with what they have, and I’m sure they’ll be feeding the media that they are happy with what they have, even though they clearly aren’t! We know Enzo Maresca isn’t!

On new centre backs at Chelsea, The Daily Mail are reporting that while Chelsea are constantly monitoring the market in case opportunities crop up, it would likely require someone leaving the Blues in order for them to bring anyone in.
I think at this point there is still a very slight chance that either of Trevoh Chalobah or Benoit Badiashile could be sold. However, the latter is injured so I guess he would not pass a medical, and there is nothing seemingly brewing for Chalobah to go right now either.
