Chelsea have two back-up options if Maignan deal not agreed | OneFootball

Chelsea have shortlisted Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and Lille’s Lucas Chevalier as back-up options if a deal can not be agreed for AC Milan’s Mike Maignan.

The West London side are currently in talks with Milan over a deal to sign Maignan, who has just 12 months to run on his contract at the San Siro.

Milan are demanding a fee of around €30m (£25.2m) for the France international, though Chelsea are hopeful of negotiating a lower sum given the 29-year-old’s contract situation.

Should an agreement not be reached, Chelsea will move on to either Trafford or Chevalier. Enquiries have already been made for both players, who fit the age profile of Chelsea’s recruitment model.

Trafford and Chevalier goalkeeper options for Chelsea

The Guardian are reporting that Trafford impressed Chelsea as Burnley won promotion to the Premier League last season, conceding just 16 goals in 46 games.

That haul is the lowest in Football League history and included a second-tier record of 12 consecutive clean sheets. Newcastle have also been linked with the 22-year-old.

Chevalier is regarded as one of Europe’s best up-and-coming shot-stoppers. Simon Phillips has claimed that Chelsea like the 23-year-old, who was named Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2024/25 campaign.

Both players are valued in excess of £30m at their current clubs but would represent longer-term additions for the Blues.

Aston Villa are also interested in Chevalier as the club seek a replacement for Emiliano Martinez. The Argentina international is expected to leave Villa Park this summer.
