The Blues went the whole season unbeaten, recording 19 wins and three draws as they claimed yet another Barclays Women’s Super League title.
All eyes will be on Chelsea this season as they look to build on their achievements but midfielder Kaptein says that the South West Londoners do not feel any pressure to continue their unbeaten streak.
“We don’t feel the pressure after not losing a single match,” Kaptein told WSL Full-Time. “I think it’s really good that we had that last year.
“We look at it year-by-year and of course, we are going to lose a game at some point. I think we just have to take it game-by-game, that’s what we did last year and that’s the tactic every year.”
While Chelsea are the title favourites once again, Arsenal are reigning European champions and Manchester City and Manchester United could come back stronger. Kaptein is happy to see other teams competing alongside Chelsea for silverware.
She said “This competition is really good and that’s why I came to England because every game is a tough game, every game you have to show your best. That’s really important and it keeps on driving improvement in your team.
“It’s really good that there’s competition. Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United are all really good teams but we are too. It’s going to be really competitive.”
After joining Chelsea in 2023, Kaptein enjoyed a breakthrough campaign for The Blues last term. The Dutch international’s self-driven attitude has helped her succeed in South West London.
She said “Of course, I signed here on my 18th birthday and I asked them to go back to my former team on loan for a year so that I could finish my school and stuff. It was quite good because I could prepare mentally to go back to England in a year, to another country.
“I went in at the beginning like ‘I’m just going to see how it goes’ but then pre-season went really well and I knew I could fit into this team and show my things. I am happy that I got a lot of minutes.
“I demand a lot from myself because I want to play a lot and improve myself, be important for the team. I know I can do better of course and that’s what I’ll try to do this year.”
Chelsea kick-off the new Barclays Women’s Super League season with a fixture against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Friday night. Tickets are on-sale now and can be purchased by clicking here.
