Real Madrid’s interest in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez had been rumoured for a while, but it had gone quiet until an update today in the Guardian.

Jacob Steinberg reports that the Blues are “determined to see off any attempt” to sign the Argentine from Madrid, who are looking to refresh a post-Kroos and Modric midfield.

With a contract that runs until 2032, there is no need for Chelsea to do anything they don’t want to right now – they hold all the cards.

Enzo has made major improvements – and can seal a good season with two more wins

Enzo has had a strong end to the season for Chelsea, adding more goals and assists to good performances, and has really endeared himself to fans with his passion in recent weeks especially. He now faces the two biggest games of his Stamford Bridge career, as the Blues go to Nottingham Forest to try and secure a place in the Champions League, and then to go Wroclaw to try and win the Conference League.

Madrid and Enzo may be a match made in heaven – but it won’t happen anytime soon

Enzo is certainly the sort of player Madrid like to sign – and we can see him both being very tempted to join, and him doing very well there. His game would actually be far better suited to the slightly slower, more spacious Spanish style than it is to the Premier League, where his lack of running power can be a weakness.

However, the finances just don’t work out. Madrid may like him, but Chelsea aren’t selling for anything less than the £100m-odd they paid for him, and that’s far beyond what Los Blancos would consider paying for him.

This piece only confirms what we already thought.
