In a recent report, L’Equipe (subscription required) mentioned that Chelsea could land Strasbourg defender Ismael Doukoure next summer. It has been stated that the Blues could end up signing the French centre-back on a free transfer when his contract runs out at the end of this season.

Doukoure’s Impressive Form In Ligue 1 Last Season

Doukoure had a solid campaign at the French club after he put in a handful of impressive displays at the heart of their backline. The 22-year-old played in 32 matches for Strasbourg last season, scoring one goal and securing one assist in multiple competitions.

The French talent was a decent performer on the defensive end of the field as he made 40 tackles, 31 blocks and 25 interceptions in Ligue 1. He even distributed the ball relatively well, based on his pass completion rate of 88.7% in the French first division (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at the French club will expire next summer, which could give the Blues a chance to snap him up on a free transfer in 2026.

Should Chelsea Boss Enzo Maresca Go For Doukoure Next Summer?

Doukoure is a tough-tackling defender who can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot.

The French sensation is an accurate passer of the ball as well. Doukoure mainly operates as a centre-back but can also play as a right-back or as a holding midfielder if needed. However, it remains to be seen whether he can cope with the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League if Chelsea decide to sign him next year.

Doukoure is already good enough to improve the quality of Enzo Maresca’s defence. He has what it takes to compete for regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge next season.

At 22, Doukoure has the potential to be a future star in European football. Therefore, Maresca would be wise to go for a player of his quality if he can sign him on a free transfer next summer. However, the Chelsea boss would have to be patient before he can unlock the best out of the talented centre-half at the West London club.
