Chelsea have been crowned the 2023/24 Women's Super League champions after a 6-0 victory over Manchester United on the final day of the season.

Emma Hayes' side went into the game level on points with Manchester City but with a two-goal advantage on goal difference, knowing they simply had to match City's result against Aston Villa to get their hands on the trophy.

Mayra Ramirez scored after just two minutes to settle the nerves, before the Colombia international set up goals for Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Sjoeke Nusken and netted a second of her own to send Chelsea into the half-time break with an imposing advantage.

Melanie Leupolz bagged her own two minutes after the restart to seal the deal, but perhaps the biggest highlight came in the dying embers when Fran Kirby added a sixth on her farewell performance as she prepares to head for pastures new this summer.

City, for their part, did their best to create some drama with a 2-1 victory over Villa but there was to be no stopping Chelsea on their path to yet another title.

A fifth-straight WSL title looked to have avoided Hayes in her final season as Chelsea manager when the Blues fell to a shock defeat at the hands of Liverpool on 1 May, but City failed to capitalise and dropped points of their own against Arsenal soon after.

That result, followed by an 8-0 win over Bristol City that boosted Chelsea's goal difference and a 1-0 triumph over Tottenham, put the Blues back on top of the standings heading into the final day, where they got the job done against United to retain the trophy.

Hayes' farewell had hit bumpy terrain when Chelsea lost to United in the FA Cup final last month and her quest to finally win the Champions League came to an abrupt end two weeks later when they were eliminated from the competition at the hands of Barcelona.

The WSL title looked to have slipped away as well but Chelsea have now handed Hayes the perfect parting gift as she prepares to take charge of the United States national team.
