Chelsea have activated an option to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Crystal Palace.
Chalobah has been recalled to Stamford Bridge with immediate effect and will not be available for Palace’s trip to face Leicester City in the Premier League tonight. Chelsea have activated the option to bring Chalobah back to the club this month to ease the club’s defensive injury issues.
Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana are currently sidelined with the latter expected to miss the remainder of the campaign. It is the latest setback for a player who has been plagued by injuries since signing for Chelsea. Axel Disasi’s future at Chelsea is also up in the air with the France international exploring a potential exit.
Enzo Maresca started 18-year-old Josh Acheampong alongside Levi Colwill for Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.
Chalobah’s return to Chelsea marks a remarkable U-turn from the Blues, after the defender was frozen out in the summer. The 25-year-old was excluded from Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the United States after being informed that he does not feature in Maresca’s plans.
Chalobah has since impressed during his loan spell at Palace and is expected to feature prominently across the run-in for Chelsea.
After a strong start to the season, Chelsea have failed to win in five Premier League games. The Blues will drop out of the Champions League places if Newcastle beat Wolves on Wednesday night.
Palace could now enter the market to sign another centre-back before the closure of the January transfer window.
