Charlton Athletic recently confirmed the appointment of Dane Murphy as their new Chief Executive Officer, subject to EFL approval.

The former Nottingham Forest and Barnsley CEO arrives with a strong reputation, and FLW's Addicks Fan Pundit Sam White believes it is a smart and ambitious move.

Charlton: Dane Murphy to be appointed new CEO

The 39-year-old American will take on a key leadership role at the Valley after successful stints at Barnsley, where he oversaw their best league finish in 20 years, and Nottingham Forest, where he helped them achieve Premier League promotion.

He took the step into the operational side of football following the conclusion of his playing career in 2015. A midfielder by trade, Murphy played for DC United, German outfit VfL Osnabrück and the New York Cosmos before he retired and took on a scouting role at the club.

He now joins Charlton ahead of their return to the Championship under Nathan Jones.

Reacting to the news, Sam was asked whether he is excited about Murphy's arrival. He told FLW: "Firstly, Dane Murphy as CEO comes in with pretty good credibility and decent experience, especially at Forest. It will be interesting to know what he thought of someone like Andy Scott, who was also at Forest during that time. They would have worked closely together on what was, ultimately, an expensive but high-risk model."

Murphy is a football-first CEO

Murphy's CV suggests a clear focus on footballing performance, and Sam believes that makes him a great fit for Charlton's next chapter.

"He does come in with good pedigree," he added. "I think he is someone who will focus more on the footballing side rather than just the operational side. I think he'll be a good person to have on board."

In a club statement, Charlton chairman Gavin Carter praised Murphy's "dynamic, ambitious profile" and said the club are "laying the foundations to take Charlton to the next level."

Nathan Jones staying seals stability

The appointment of Murphy follows manager Nathan Jones' decision to remain at the club despite heavy interest from Cardiff City. The 52-year-old guided the Addicks to promotion through the League One play-offs and has now committed to a five-year deal.

Speaking to FLW recently. Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman backed Jones' decision to stay amid links with his boyhood club, Cardiff City: "Charlton is a big club that is a league higher than Cardiff City. He has worked very, very hard to get them there, so I do understand why he would choose to stay."
