Luton Town midfielder Allan Campbell is currently on loan at Charlton Athletic.

Charlton Athletic have signed a number of former Luton Town players since the arrival of Nathan Jones as manager last year.

The Welshman made his name as a manager at Kenilworth Road, impressing during two separate spells at the club and playing a significant role in their rise from the fourth tier of English football to the Premier League, despite twice leaving the club to join Stoke City and Southampton.

Since his appointment at The Valley last year, former Hatters such as Kazenga LuaLua, Dan Potts, Danny Hylton, and Luke Berry have found their way to Charlton.

It is clear that Jones likes linking up with players he has worked with in the past, although one of his signings from Luton has not lived up to expectations since joining the Addicks on a season-long loan during the summer transfer window.

Charlton agreed a deal to bring midfielder Allan Campbell to the club on loan until the end of the 2024/25 campaign in August, but the Scotsman hasn't made the desired impact so far this term.

Campbell played 42 games in the Championship for Luton when they won promotion to the Premier League in 2023, so it is easy to see why Jones thought he would be a good acquisition for a League One side, despite him having had a disappointing loan spell in the second tier with Millwall last season.

However, the 26-year-old has made just 12 appearances in League One for the Addicks and only one of his six starts has ended in victory.

His only goal contribution came when he found Chuks Aneke with a pass during the draw at home against Rotherham United in September before the striker found the top corner with a long-range effort to earn a point late on.

He last started for Charlton in their disastrous home defeat against Crawley Town in December and he has made just three cameo appearances in the nine League One fixtures since then, while he was left out of the squad entirely for the win over Shrewsbury Town at the weekend.

It is unknown whether Charlton have an option to cut short Campbell's loan spell this month, but they should consider taking any possible action they can to bring his time in SE7 to an end, especially as it could potentially enable Nathan Jones to bring in a new signing.

Charlton Athletic are yet to make a January signing

There was hope among Charlton supporters that, following the departures of Tayo Edun and Terry Taylor, they would make one or two additions to the squad to improve their chances of mounting a push for the League One play-offs during the remainder of the campaign.

Unfortunately for them, there is still yet to be any incoming transfer activity at The Valley this month. However, if the club were able to come to an agreement that would see Campbell return to Luton, then it could make a January arrival a more realistic possibility before the end of the month.

The midfielder has been linked with a move back to Scotland this month, with Rangers, Aberdeen, Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian reportedly interested in his services, which could of course bring his loan spell at Charlton to a premature end, and could be the Addicks' best hope of him being recalled by the Hatters.

It remains to be seen whether Campbell will leave Charlton this month, but if the club is able to part ways with the midfielder, then it is imperative that they use the opportunity to bring in a replacement to improve the squad.
