Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been told to consider moving Daizen Maeda into a central role. The club’s transfer activity is on everyone’s mind especially after a laboured 1-0 opening day win over St Mirren.
Speaking on Go Radio’s football show on Monday, Mulgrew said the club need to get wingers in and that the manager could look to push the Japanese hitman into a central role.
“Celtic now need to get some wingers in. I think they need two wingers and a striker — or at least two wingers to push Maeda inside. That would give them more creativity.
“When James Forrest comes on, he changes the game by being direct and driving across the pitch. He had a hand in the goal yesterday (Sunday).
“They need creative players. They’ve been unlucky with the Jota injury, but they still need more in that final third to break down teams sitting in low blocks and denying space.”
There is perhaps an argument for Celtic to get a loan player in to offer cover for Jota, perhaps even a loan with an option. The difficulty that Celtic have is waiting until it’s late in the window. There may be bargains to pick up or players that wouldn’t ordinarily be available; however, supporters aren’t convinced that the club have their transfer business in hand given recent seasons inactivity.
In fairness to the club, the midfield, defence and goalkeeping positions are all well stocked. The only suggestion that some might have is another left back to offer cover for Kieran Tierney but Inamura remains an option.
