Liverpool have been handed the green light they wanted to sign a Premier League captain. This one could now move quickly.
Liverpool are not finished in the transfer market and Sunday showed why. The Reds started brilliantly with Hugo Ekitiké's goal, assisted by Florian Wirtz, and were flying.
But as the match went on, problems became clear. Liverpool simply don't have the squad they need in order to compete, certainly not at this stage.

The midfield looked short with Ryan Gravenberch out. Ekitike going off then highlighted the lack of any backup striker now Darwin Nunez has left.
Arne Slot instead played with two attacking midfielders in a box midfield once the Frenchman went off. That needs to change.
Then there was a worrying moment in the first-half when Ibrahima Konate went down. Now, it turned out to just be an eye injury and he was fine to continue but it again highlighted a problem.
Joe Gomez is injured, meaning there was no centre-back on the bench. Liverpool have sold Jarell Quansah, after all, without replacing him.
A new centre-back is an absolute must - and now the Reds have been given the green light to sign the one they want.
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has been talking after the Community Shield and the topic of Marc Guehi is an obvious one. Palace's captain has under one year remaining on his contract and shows no signs of renewing.
Parish, though, doesn't believe Palace can afford to let him run that contract down. They'll need to sell before the transfer window closes.
"We'd have to [sell], of course," said Parish, per the BBC. "For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it's a problem for us unfortunately.
