Celtic on this Day – A Colin Jackson OG wins the Old Firm match for Celtic back in 1977, he’d repeat the trick just after two years later in the remarkable 4-2 game…

Celtic 1-0 Rangers. Jock Stein’s side made it back-to-back 1-0 victories over their rivals in this rescheduled Old Firm clash. Game was postponed from 3 January, and was lucky to be played a week later. Glasgow was still suffering from the effects of heavy snow, and the pitch was hard and frosty. Volunteers from the Celtic supporters association came together overnight and put down bales of straw in order to protect the surface, which paid off! Colin Jackson’s own-goal with 15 to play put Celtic top of the league with a game in hand. Pat Stanton was described as ‘Cool hand Luke’ in the newspapers for another impeccable performance. Rod Stewart attended the game with his former partner Britt Eklund.

Hearts 1-2 Celtic. Tommy Burns’ men had recovered admirably from a sore 3-1 defeat against Rangers at Ibrox on 2 January. A five and a six-goal margin of victory versus Motherwell and Kilmarnock was followed by this important win at Tynecastle. Jorge Cadete’s brace brought a four-match unbeaten run for the Jambos against Celtic to an end.

A great goal from Pierre van Hooydonk on his debut for Celtic against Hearts on 11th January 1995. Press cutting…

Celtic 1-1 Hearts. Pierre Van Hooijdonk’s spectacular strike on his Celtic debut seemed to set up a rare victory for the Hoops. However, you will not be shocked to read that it ended a draw. To be exact, a 13th draw of the season in the league. Celtic’s new Bhoy showed his quality, but in the end, it was immaterial as we dropped yet more points in a dreadful campaign where we had 18 draws.

Joe Dodds scored

SATURDAY 11 JANUARY 1919 – A crowd of 16,000 see Celtic beat Clydebank 3-1 at Parkhead with goals from Jimmy McColl, Joe Dodds and Joe Cassidy. The maestro behind it all, however, is Jimmy McMenemy.

Jimmy McGrory scored a hat-trick

SATURDAY 11 JANUARY 1936 – Celtic are without the injured Jimmy Delaney, but this does not seem to cause any particular bother as they turn it on and defeat Queen of the South 5-0 today at Parkhead. The goal scoring machine of Jimmy McGrory scores another hat-trick, and the other goals come from Johnny Crum and Frank Murphy. Confidence is rising that this year could see the first Scottish League Championship for a decade.

Stevie Chalmers scored against Eyemouth…

SATURDAY 11 JANUARY 1964 – Eyemouth pay their first ever visit to Parkhead to meet Celtic in the Scottish Cup. The 0-0 score line at half-time raises a few eyebrows, but in the second-half two goals from Steve Chalmers and one from Charlie Gallagher do the trick. The 17,000 fans give Eyemouth a better reception at full-time than they do Celtic, for this has been a Celtic performance that was only competent.

SATURDAY 11 JANUARY 1986 – Celtic and Aberdeen draw 1-1 at Parkhead in front of 31,305 spectators. Joe Miller opens the scoring for the Dons in the 10th minute but Peter Grant replies a few minutes later. Both teams then have a few chances but managers Davie Hay and Alex Ferguson agree that a draw was a fair result in what is this year a very open Championship race with Hearts and Dundee United both very much in contention as well.

MONDAY 11 JANUARY 2021 – An extremely difficult night for Celtic as they draw 1-1 with Hibs at home, but they are under a great deal of flak for having gone on a trip to Dubai (after losing to theRangers at the New Year) when most of the country is under lockdown because of the Coronavirus pandemic. This was insensitive at best and foolish at worst, and 13 of their staff were ordered to self-isolate on their return. Gavin Strachan is in charge of the team, David Turnbull scores a good goal, but Hibs score a late equaliser at the end. Celtic’s troubles are all of their own making!
