theRangers 1-2 Celtic. Brendan Rodgers’ side came from behind to defeat their bitter rivals and move 19 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a game in hand. It was the Hoops’ first visit to Ibrox since March 2012 following the collapse and eventual liquidation of the old club.

Playing a derby encounter on Hogmanay seemed strange, possibly the first and only time in history? Celtic had only dropped two points all season and were on course for an historic campaign. Kenny Miller opened the scoring and became the only man in history to score for all three teams in the Glasgow Derby [Rangers, Celtic and now theRangers].

Moussa Dembele’s leveller proved to be unstoppable for Wes Foderingham. Scotty Sinclair grabbed the winner after a sensational cross courtesy of the in-form Stuart Armstrong. The travelling support in the Broomloan End displayed a banner prior to the match, “no history, no money, no trophies.” Hilariously, the Celtic fans got their own back on theRangers supporters who damaged the toilets in the Lisbon Lions stand at Celtic Park earlier on in the season by decorating the Ibrox club’s toilets with green and white candles.

Post-match, Brendan Rodgers said, “I’m disappointed probably just to have two goals.” It was, indeed, a Happy New Year to the men in Hoops.

Celtic 4-2 Hearts. Billy Stark scored his 100th league goal to seal the win for the Hoops in a six-goal Scottish Premier Division thriller. Mark McGhee also netted a brace which gave Billy McNeill’s side a much-needed victory following a 2-0 defeat at Tannadice, and a 0-0 draw with Aberdeen at Celtic Park in the two league matches prior.

Hibs 0-1 Celtic. Veteran Hibs defender John Blackley scored an own-goal late on which crucially gave Celtic a victory. Tommy Burns was dropped after a loss of form. Less than 12,000 turned out at Easter Road for this stormy New Year’s Eve clash which was marred by gale-force wind. Willy Irvine was inches away from securing a last-minute equaliser for the hosts.

Third Lanark 2-4 Celtic. The Hoops had now scored 15 goals in their last three league games, and 32 in their last six. The 1898/1899 season was only a 17-game campaign which included competing in the Scottish Cup, which Celtic won. Back-to-back 4-0 defeats to Rangers and St Mirren in late September and early October ultimately hampered Willie Maley’s side claiming the title.
