Celtic handed transfer blow by Elvis Rexhbecaj's comments

Signing a defensive midfielder seems to be near the top of Celtic's transfer wishlist. They have been linked with quite a few in recent weeks. Wataru Endo is a name that has re-emerged in the rumour mill. The Hoops were said to hold an interest in the Liverpool player last summer as well. On the other hand, Kalidou Sidibe of Guingamp appears to be a new name on their radar.

Another fresh name that has emerged is that of Elvis Rexhbecaj. The FC Augsburg midfielder is a former teammate of Arne Engels.

He is in his prime at 27 years of age and has 179 Bundesliga appearances to his name. So, signing someone of that pedigree would have to be considered as a coup for Celtic.

Unfortunately, it does not look like Rexhbecaj is particularly interested in leaving FC Augsburg at any point in the near future. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, during his international duties with Kosovo, he told the media this week:

"I have been a part of the team whenever I have been fit, and I do everything I can to contribute. From a personal point of view, I have remained true to myself and continue to grow. This is helped by the fact that I feel at home here; I have the feeling that I am here for the long term.“We are definitely having a very good period and have created some distance between ourselves and the bottom of the table. However, we have to keep our feet on the ground; things can change at any moment in the Bundesliga, so we cannot allow ourselves to lose focus.“We have to stay focused and not get hung up on the table, but take each game as it comes and continue to build on what we have done.“I want to continue to do everything I can to help us achieve success and continue to progress as a team."

Those do not sound like the comments of a player who is looking to leave in the summer. Of course, in modern football, things can change very fast. So, do not rule anything out yet.

It is also worth pointing out that Celtic will be linked with plenty of players over the coming months. That is always the case. Some rumours will have substance to them. Others might be the creation of the rumour mill. So, it is advisable to take most of it with a pinch of salt at this point in the season.

One thing is for sure though. Celtic need to strengthen the squad in the summer. There are still weaknesses in this team, even though they are closing in on another domestic treble. Back-to-back defeats in the Glasgow Derby serve as proof of that.
