Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has this weekend provided a fresh insight into the penalty-taker pecking order in his squad.
This, of course, comes fresh off another outing which saw the spot-kick situation in Real’s ranks take its place front and centre in the headlines.
Los Blancos kicked their endeavours for 2025 into gear with a victory over Valencia at Mestalla on Friday night.
This only came, however, owing to a last-gasp comeback, sealed by Jude Bellingham deep into injury-time.
Prior to as much, it was Bellingham himself who blew the chance to draw the visitors on level terms, after directing a penalty off the base of the post.
Real’s third missed spot-kick of the season to date, chatter, in turn, quickly spread amongst the Blancos faithful regarding the need for one designated penalty-taker.
All of Bellingham, Vinícius Jr. and Kylian Mbappé have been entrusted from 12 yards thus far in 2024/25.
Speaking to the media in his pre-Deportivo Minera press conference on Sunday, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of as much was put to Real’s headmaster.
And Carlo Ancelotti, in his response, went on to confirm that he will no longer afford the choice to his players, with the Italian set to decide who will be responsible from 12 yards prior to each fixture kicking off.
Not only that, but Ancelotti also named the five potential spot-kick takers in his squad, including, somewhat surprisingly, youngster Arda Güler:
“Penalty takers? I will decide before each game. It can be Vinícius, Bellingham, Mbappé, Modrić or Arda Güler.”
