Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that a somewhat forgotten member of his squad could step into a more prominent role over the weeks ahead.
The player in question? Jesús Vallejo.
Defender Vallejo, for his part, has endured something of a campaign to forget to date.
Owing to a combination of competition for places, and a string of fitness problems, the 28-year-old has been afforded a grand total of one appearance across all competitions, amounting to 10 minutes on game time.
As alluded to above, though, if the latest comments on the part of manager Carlo Ancelotti are anything to go by, then Vallejo could yet be cast back into the limelight over the season’s final weeks.
Real Madrid’s backline has been nothing short of ravaged by injuries over the last week, as all of David Alaba, Ferland Mendy and Antonio Rüdiger have joined long-term absentees Dani Carvajal and Éder Militão on the sidelines.
Something of a hole, in turn, has opened up at the heart of Los Blancos’ backline.
And speaking to the media in his latest pre-match press conference on Saturday, Carlo Ancelotti hinted that as much could yet culminate in fresh minutes for Vallejo over the next few weeks:
“Jesús Vallejo? Yes, he has more options to play now.”
