FLW's Cardiff City fan pundit has given his verdict on Rubin Colwill's future at the club
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
The summer transfer window has now closed and Cardiff City have been able to retain one of their most important players in Rubin Colwill.
The Bluebirds suffered relegation from the Championship last season, which led to some uncertainty over whether key players would remain with the club.
Earlier on in the summer, it was reported that multiple Championship sides were eyeing up a move for Colwill, however nothing materialised in the end,.
The 23-year-old has already contributed three goals and one assist from six appearances from the opening six fixtures in the league so far this season.
When asked about Colwill remaining at the club, FLW’s Cardiff fan pundit Matt Hall claimed it is a relief for everyone.
He believes that the Welshman is the centre-piece of the project being built by the League One side at the moment, so his departure would’ve been particularly devastating.
“I'm very relieved, as will every Cardiff City fan,” Hall told Football League World.
“Beyond the quality of the player, he’s become a leader now.
“Callum Chambers is not really part of the main side, so he is the captain, he is pretty much the face of the project that we’re building here.
“It is academy-centric, it is based on the young players, and he is the face of that.
“He is the youngster, the academy player that has been here for the longest amount of time now.
“He’s the one that all of the younger people in the U18s will look up to as the success-story of the academy in its modern era, he’s the one that makes everything tick.
“It would’ve been a disaster if he had gone, especially after the season had started because it would’ve just destroyed everything we’re building here.
“I’m not massively surprised, if I’m being completely honest either.
“It was very clear from what he was saying that he would rather be a captain and build something here than be a bit-part player somewhere else, which I appreciate.
“And he’s also here with his brother, who he has such a good relationship with and it’s a very unique situation to be able to play football with your brother and both be at a very good level, so exciting stuff.”
Cardiff are currently top of the League One table after six games, having earned 16 points from a possible 18 under Brian Barry-Murphy.
Colwill is someone that could’ve easily made the jump back up to the Championship over the summer.
But Cardiff have been able to retain him without any extreme pressure surrounding his future, which is a great endorsement of the project being built by the club.
It’s been a very promising start to the new season for the team under Barry-Murphy, and it’s an optimistic time for supporters after the disappointment of relegation.
The focus on youth is proving a worthwhile strategy for the Bluebirds, and the success of Colwill is a sign that it’s the way forward for the club.
