MIAMI – Canada and the United States face off in the Third Place Match of the 2025 Concacaf Nations League Finals on Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, USA.
This will be a first-time clash for third place in the CNL Finals. The neighboring nations share a storied history, with the U.S. coming on top 18 times, while the Canadians have 12 victories to their name, with 13 matches ending in a draw.
The USA will look to bounce back after failing to reach the Final for the first time after winning the first three editions. Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic, will be among the players looking to lead the USA to redemption with a bronze medal finish.
The Stars and Stripes attempted 29 crosses in their semifinal defeat against Panama, their most in a competitive match (excluding friendlies) since attempting 41 against Jamaica in the semifinals of the 2023/24 Concacaf Nations League.
Canada will be fighting to get to the CNL Third place for the first time. Alphonso Davies and Cyle Larin will seek to find the back of the net to bring the Reds their second CNL medal.
Davies completed seven dribbles against Mexico in the semifinals on Thursday, the most ever in a match in the semi-finals or final of the Concacaf Nations League, and has completed 60 dribbles in his career in all rounds in the Concacaf Nations League – 20 more than any other player.
The USA holds an overall record of 2W-0D-1L against Canada in the previous CNL encounters. The last time they met was in the championship match of the 2023 CNL Finals, won 2-nil by the U.S. with goals from Chris Richards and Folarin Balogun.
The U.S. has won all five previous knockout-stage encounters between these teams, including crucial Gold Cup and World Cup qualifying matches.
Head-To-Head
They will face off for the fourth time in the Concacaf Nations League and for the first time in the third-place match. The record stands at two wins for the United States and one defeat.
Of their three meetings in the CNL, two took place in the group stage, and one was a direct knockout clash. The first encounter was on Matchday 4 of Group A on October 15, 2019, where Canada secured a 2-0 victory with goals from Alphonso Davies (63') and Lucas Cavallini (90+1'). The second match was on November 15, 2019, in the same group, where the U.S. claimed its first win with a commanding 4-1 result, thanks to goals from Jordan Morris (2'), Gyasi Zardes (23', 89'), and Aaron Long (33'), while Steven Vitoria (72') scored for the Canadians. Their third and most recent duel in this tournament was the 2022/2023 edition final on June 18, 2023, where the U.S. triumphed 2-0 with goals from Chris Richards (12') and Folarin Balogun (34'), clinching their second title.
This will be the sixth knockout match between these two sides in any competition. Every time they’ve met in a direct elimination game, the U.S. has come out on top:
Canada's biggest win in this rivalry came in the 1958 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, a 5-1 victory at BMO Stadium on June 22, 1957, with goals from Norman McLeod (32'), Brian Philley (35'), Arthur Hughes (55', 80'), and Gordon Stewart (57').
Meanwhile, the U.S.’s biggest wins came in two friendlies:
