Milan captain Davide Calabria has issued a statement on Instagram, claiming ‘fake news’ after he and some of his teammates came under criticism following recent comments made by Rossoneri head coach Paulo Fonseca.
Fonseca questioned some of his players’ attitude during his post-match press conference following the 2-1 win over Crvena Zvezda in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Rossoneri coach suggested that certain members of the group had not fulfilled their obligation of giving the maximum for the shirt. He also added that he would not be afraid to play players from the Milan Futuro or Primavera sides if the situation does not improve.
As the coach did not call out any individuals specifically, supporters and reporters were left wondering who exactly Fonseca was referring to during his post-match rant.
Among the players suggested were Theo Hernandez and Calabria. The latter has now felt it appropriate to respond to recent reports, where he has made it clear that he gives 100% every day, and that suggestions otherwise are ‘fake news’.
“Hi everyone, I feel the need to clarify something,” the Milan captain wrote in a statement on Instagram.
“I’ve let a few things slide over the last few months hoping to avoid having to respond to ‘unpleasant’ situations or ones that are completely made up. Maybe I should have done so earlier. Today I think the time has come to say a few words.
“In recent days and in the past a lot of incorrect information has been circulating around me and our team. Fake news that should not be given any credit, but now I believe it requires a response to protect my image and that of the group.
“The insinuations about on-field dynamics, various different confrontations and my private life do not match up with the truth. They only create confusion and division. I ask for respect for myself, for the job we are doing and the club we represent.
“Constructive criticism is part of our job, but lies are not. I invite everyone to verify before spreading news that can harm people or our club.
“Our focus remains on the pitch, where we’re working to the maximum every day with the utmost professionalism to try and improve.
“I will not allow anyone to undermine my love and commitment to my favourite team.
“Thank you to those who always support us. Forza Milan.”
