Burnley fans have been reacting to new reports that Newcastle United are trying to sign James Trafford.
Previously, it was widely reported that Eddie Howe had tried to sign the young goalkeeper.
Indeed, James Trafford himself has said he was frustrated last year when he wasn’t able to make a move to St James’ Park.
So is the James Trafford transfer to Newcastle United finally set to happen?
I think in situations like this, when Newcastle United are claimed to be trying to sign a player, the best way of finding out how good the player is (or isn’t…), is by looking at what his current club’s fans think about him…
Burnley fans commenting via their Up The Clarets message board on Newcastle United trying to buy James Trafford:
‘Trafford will soon be off to Newcastle.’
‘This has been 12 months in the making so it’s hardly a surprise. He wanted to leave last summer. Maybe the club came to an agreement with Trafford in order to get another season out of him? We aren’t usually a club that stands in the way of player progress; it’s one of the reasons we get young …’
‘Trafford will bring money.
Good luck with the rebuild Scott.’
‘The other factor to consider with Trafford is that he is highly regarded by Tuchel – who it would appear sees him as a future number one especially given his age Tuchel has said he prefers his players to be involved in European club football…’
‘Trafford has always been seen as an investment by the club and I would expect them to accept an offer before the start of the season if it agrees with their valuation.’
‘The more this progresses, and with a high price ticket Trafford seems to have, the more I think it will be beneficial for Trafford to stay with us. Subject to injury, he is likely to play every league game.’
‘As Nick Pope is their established keeper, Trafford must know he’s likely to spend pretty much all of next season on the bench (aside from cup games, injuries etc.).’
‘Pope wasn’t that great last season. If they spend that much on Trafford he isn’t going to be a backup.’
‘Seems like we are holding out for a number ‘well in excess of £30m’ for Trafford.’
‘and so we should, otherwise we may well end up looking like fools further down the line.’
‘Newcastle certainly want him. I suspect they will want the injury prone Pope to return to Burnley as part of the deal.’
‘This is how I see the true order in the Premier League: 1. Manchester United 2. Liverpool 3. Arsenal 4. Manchester City 5. Chelsea 6. Newcastle 7. Aston Villa 8. Spurs – Everton – Burnley- West Ham The rest.’
‘I think Trafford would benefit massively from a season with us. Plenty of action and a real chance to showcase his ability and challenge Pickford for the England No1 spot. But money talks.’
‘He did an interview recently saying he wanted to leave last summer and admitted he sulked about not getting his move. He said he saw Newcastle as the ideal club for his development. I think he’ll be gone.
‘My hunch is Trafford ends up back at Man City. Their goalkeeper situation is up in the air and if offers from Newcastle get close to their buyback I think they’ll activate it.’
‘£30m is too cheap for Trafford. Old stats of sales aren’t relevant any more.’
‘£30m is probably fair market value, but the premium should be up to £40m. As for Trafford leaving, initially I was really against it, but I think there are other excellent and more experienced keepers out there.’
‘I’m sure that Trafford will go with a fee in the top 3 or 4 for a keeper of his age. I agree that 30m seems on the low side.’
‘It does make sense to sell him this summer really. Trafford won’t be the reason we are conceding goals for fun most weeks, but the likelihood is we probably will be and that might affect his value hugely again.’
‘Big money for Trafford…I think the timing is perfect.’
‘The Premier League are confirming in the next few days which clubs are in clear breach of PSR rules and Villa and Newcastle are apparently top of the offenders and liable for penalties.’
‘Newcastle were quite happy when the boot was on the other foot and they took Pope off us for a “song”!’
‘Any fee to Newcastle must include A) The oil tax B) the secondary oil tax namely a cut for City C) The Chris Wood Tax incl relegation D) The FA Cup 1974 Seni Final tax’
‘Let’s add another couple E) Nick Pope bargain tax F) Malcolm Mcdonald tax’
‘Newcastle need an English quota for Champions League. That obviously does not impact the current #1, but plays a part for the squad.’
‘The gamble is when will his stock be highest? Now or at the end of next season? What was promised, if anything, to James when we turned down Newcastle last time? Personally I’d want to keep James until I’d identified the next best goalkeeper of a similar age, under market value.’
‘Don’t mess us about unless there is huge money. Just like Palace’s plan re Guehi. Last season he was priced at £70m and Newcastle re-buffed 3 times for not meeting the ticket price.’
‘I don’t understand why so many think Trafford is off to Newcastle.
‘According to The Times, Newcastle want Trafford as competition for Pope. I’m not sure that I can see that being a particularly attractive option for him (or Pope!). I’d be shocked if Trafford went anywhere where he wasn’t guaranteed…’
