Not too long ago, Real Madrid appeared destined to sign Alvaro Carreras from SL Benfica this summer.

The Spaniard had emerged as the club’s prime target as they looked to shore up their ranks in the left-back position. However, things have stalled since then.

Carreras is currently representing Benfica in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup and the deal has become complicated, due to the difference in valuation between the two clubs.

Alejandro Grimaldo emerges as an option

Amid compliccations in the Carreras deal, Real Madrid appear to be eyeing a move for Alejandro Grimaldo.

This is according to Cadena SER, which suggests that the Bayer Leverkusen star has become a serious option for Real Madrid in their bid to sign a new left-back.

Grimaldo has enjoyed immense success since joining Leverkusen. He was a vital cog in Xabi Alonso’s system and was notably involved in 17 competitive goals last season.

The report adds that Grimaldo is considering offers from the Premier League, but it appears the full-back is open to joining Real Madrid as well.

This is despite the fact that Grimaldo shares a Barcelona heritage, given that he is a product of the famed La Masia academy.

In fact, even Barcelona have been linked with a move for Grimaldo lately, though one may argue that Real Madrid can offer him a more prominent role in the team.

It is no secret that Los Blancos are not happy with the quality of Fran Garcia while Ferland Mendy’s injury history doesn’t spark any confidence either.

Grimaldo, to that end, could be an ideal signing for the club, especially given his past success in working with Xabi Alonso.

Grimaldo, for his part, is confident that Alonso will want to sign him should the Carreras deal falls in the coming days.
