The new Sheffield United new owners are reportedly looking to dive deeper into the Bulgarian football market after the arrivals of Christian Nwachukwu, in January, and Ehije Success Ukaki this summer.

The two young wingers were recruited from Botev Plovdiv, and early indications suggest the Blades’ hierarchy believe there’s more value to be found in Bulgaria’s top flight.

It’s understood that the club’s new recruitment structure, heavily reliant on performance data, is actively monitoring several players across the Bulgarian First League, per The Star. With data support from Genius Sports, who have an office in Sofia and have formal ties to the Bulgarian Football Union, United may be set for yet more signings from the country.

Ironically, the very club the Blades have signed Nwachukwu and Ukaki from, Botev Plovdiv, is facing a dire financial situation. Botev recently published its list of creditors and revealed that the club is staring down the possibility of bankruptcy, with total liabilities reaching BGN 5.45 million (approximately €2.75 million). Of this, BGN 438,000 in local taxes have been restructured until 2029, as per Inside World Football.

The crisis stems from complications involving owner Anton Zingarevich. In a phone call with club executives, Zingarevich reportedly agreed to explore three separate avenues for keeping Botev operational, though none are guaranteed to succeed. Bankruptcy remains a distinct possibility, the club admits.

For Sheffield United, this could spell both opportunity and controversy. On one hand, the financial instability may force Botev to cash in on more of their young players, allowing United to strike favourable deals.

On the other hand, the close ties between their recruitment partners Genius Sports and the Bulgarian football establishment could raise questions about a bias influence in the talent identification process. The use of data analytics firms like Genius Sports, especially those involved within a national football structure, raises questions.

Could the Blades become overly reliant on a narrow pool of data, possibly skewed by local affiliations in Bulgaria? Because right now, you add two and two together, and it’s looking kind of that way.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United need to start advancing on targets for the first-team as there is a long summer ahead, no matter which manager is in charge.

The Blades need arguably two centre-backs, at least one right-back, a central midfielder, a couple of wingers at a minimum, and likely one more body up front – this is all without anybody being sold this summer as well.
