Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo is growing frustrated as his proposed move to Manchester United drags along, according to an individual close to the player.
United lodged an opening bid worth £55m earlier in June for Mbeumo, but this was swiftly rejected by Brentford, who insisted they wanted more.
The Red Devils returned with an improved offer worth a total £62.5m – the same amount they forked out to acquire the services of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers. There was optimism that this second bid would be accepted but in a transfer twist, the Bees also turned it down.
Talks have been ongoing for weeks now to try and find a solution that works for all parties.
It’s understood Brentford could be holding out for as much as £70m. Meanwhile, United are adamant they will not overpay for Mbeumo, despite a remarkable 2024/25 campaign in which he plundered a career-high 20 goals in the Premier League.
Brentford have insisted, both privately and publicly, that they are happy to keep Mbeumo. His contract at the Gtech Community Stadium expires next summer but the club has an option to extend his stay by an additional 12 months.
There have been claims that there the deal could collapse but United are believed to still be hopeful that they will have wrapped everything up by the time Ruben Amorim and his players jet off to the United States for pre-season later this month.
Mbeumo has made it clear he is only interested in joining United, even as he attracts interest from other suitors in the Premier League.
This has been confirmed by Cameroon assistant coach Ashu Cyprian Besong, who has revealed that he recently had a talk with the 25-year-old regarding his potential switch to Old Trafford.
Besong told Telecom Asia, “Yes, obviously he’s very frustrated with how long it’s taken. But he’s a professional and anticipates these things.”
“I spoke to him about a week ago and he is very calm with everything that is going on.”
“But of course, he’s already told them he wants to go to United. He just wanted the two clubs to find an agreement, as he’s very grateful for the opportunity that he’s been given by Brentford in his career.”
