Sparta Rotterdam have signed Bruno Martins Indi. The 33-year-old defender joins as a free agent after his contract with AZ Alkmaar expired. Martins Indi has signed a contract with Sparta until the summer of 2027 with an option for an additional year.
Martins Indi returns to the Rotterdam, the place where he made his professional breakthrough with Feyenoord. After graduating from the Varkenoord academy, he left-footed centre-back made 118 appearances, before securing a transfer to FC Porto.
After 71 matches in Portugal, Martins Indi moved to England in 2016 to join Stoke City, There, he made 137 appearances, with 52 of these in the Premier League. For the past five seasons, Martins Indi has been back in the Netherlands, with AZ Alkmaar. Besides playing for Feyenoord, FC Porto, Stoke City, and AZ, Martins Indi also earned 36 caps for the Dutch national team.
Technical Director Gerard Nijkamp spoke of the move: “With Mike Eerdhuijzen’s departure to FC Utrecht, we wanted to strengthen our squad this summer with a left-footed central defender. We’ve found the perfect fit in Bruno. Bruno has proven himself at the top level for years and, with 188 Eredivisie matches, knows better than anyone what this league demands. We also see Bruno as someone who can share his experience with players just starting their careers. We’re looking forward to at least two great years with Bruno.”
