Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes has once again demonstrated his sumptuous talent to the world of English football by creating more chances than any other player in the league.

It is true that the Portugal international did not enjoy his best start to the season and he was criticised for his suitability to be captain by the likes of Roy Keane and Paul Ince.

However, Fernandes really sparked into life in the spring, once again taking on the role of club talisman. His final ten matches in the Premier League yielded seven goals and three assists for the Red Devils.

With the FA Cup final still to play, Fernandes is the club’s second top goalscorer with 15 goals in all competitions. He once again leads the way in assists as he has provided 12 for his team to make an impressive 27 goal contributions in a less than free-flowing team.

In fact, his creative absence was massively felt as in the two matches he missed through injury versus Crystal Palace and Arsenal the Red Devils failed to score in either and lost both games. On his return, they scored five times in two matches in victories over Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion.

Statman Dave has also highlighted two statistics which show the creative genius of the player.

“Bruno Fernandes created 114 chances in the Premier League this season, 10 more than any other player.”

“He is the first player since Eden Hazard to create the most chances in back-to-back Premier League seasons.”

All in all, he has created 233 chances in the last two Premier League seasons.

These statistics would be impressive if he played in a fully functioning team, but when you consider the goal-shy one he plays for, these stats take on a whole new level of value. United lack real quality and depth up front, which will inevitably make it harder for any player to create.

Rasmus Hojlund is a talented youngster but he is still raw and learning on the job and has been overplayed due to Anthony Martial spending the majority of the season on the treatment table. Moreover, wingers Antony and Marcus Rashford have both endured quite probably the worst seasons of their careers and the two most in-form United wide attackers, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood, are currently not at the club.

In addition, whilst the rise of Kobbie Mainoo has been a breath of fresh air for everyone connected at the club, he is still only 19 years old, so hardly the easiest midfield partner. Then there is the Casemiro dilemma, who whilst putting in an improved performance yesterday, has also probably experienced the worst campaign of his career.

Therefore, Bruno’s performances should not be judged on statistics alone, despite how impressive they are. He has been surrounded by a proverbial clown-car of support at times, yet still managed to shine. Were he to play in a more settled, well-oiled side like Manchester City or Arsenal, it is scary to think what sort of numbers he would put up.
