AC Milan have not started their Champions League campaign in an ideal way. However, they have a chance at redemption when they play Club Brugge on matchday two. It could be another bad day, though, if the Belgian club’s captain gets his wish.

The moods after the two defeats in the competition could not be more different. After the Liverpool loss, things were woeful. Milan were going to lose the derby, and Paulo Fonseca was close to an exit. Of course, neither of those things happened.

Following the defeat on Tuesday against Leverkusen, the fans are seeing things differently, and whilst context plays a role, there is an identity being formed, which can be appreciated. Yes, the Rossoneri lost, but Fonseca stated it was one of the side’s best games since he took over, and there were a lot of positive signs to take from the clash.

Positive signs must become tangible, though, as another defeat in the league would lower the Diavolo’s chances of qualification significantly. After Brugge’s victory against Sturm Graz, Hans Vanaken, the club’s captain, spoke to the media about the Milan fixture, and his words have been relayed by Milan News.

“We would like to upset them [Milan], but first let’s enjoy this victory here at Sturm Graz. We really needed this win [the one against Sturm Graz] in order to advance to the next round.”
