Bristol Rovers midfielder Antony Evans has been the subject of a bid from Huddersfield Town, according to Bristol Live.

The Gas have turned down the offer for the 25-year-old, who has one year remaining on his contract at the Memorial Stadium.

Evans has been a key player for Bristol Rovers since his arrival from German club SC Paderborn 07 in 2021, having helped the club gain promotion from League Two and establish themselves back in the third tier.

Huddersfield are showing ambition

Huddersfield are showing that they intend to return to the Championship at the first time of asking next season.

They appointed former Barnsley and Cheltenham Town boss Michael Duff to replace Andre Breitenreiter shortly after their relegation from the Championship. The 46-year-old reached the League One play-off final with the Tykes at the end of the 2022/23 season.

The Terriers have already signed wing-back Lasse Sorensen from Lincoln City, who was one of the best performers in League One last season in his position.

They have also had a bid rejected for Charlton Athletic striker Alfie May, who won the golden boot in the third tier last season with 23 goals, and are expected to return with an improved offer for the 30-year-old.

Now they have made an offer for Evans, who was one of the best midfielders in the division last season, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists in all competitions for the Gas.

Huddersfield have sold highly-rated midfielder Jack Rudoni to Coventry City in a multi-million pound deal this summer, and it looks like they have identified their first-choice target to replace the 23-year-old in Evans.

Bristol Rovers may need to consider selling Evans

Despite Rovers turning down Huddersfield's bid for Evans, there is certainly no guarantee that he will still be at the club by the end of the transfer window.

The midfielder only has a year left on his contract at the Memorial Stadium, and it seems as though he will not be agreeing a new deal. That means that Rovers must consider selling the 25-year-old this summer, or run the risk of losing him for nothing at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Former Bristol Rovers Head of Data and Analysis, Adam Mahoney, left the club in April and joined Huddersfield this summer. He will be no stranger to Evans' qualities, and may have had an influence on the Terriers' registering an interest in the midfielder.

The News reported at the start of the summer that Portsmouth were targeting Evans, as the newly promoted Championship outfit plan for their first season back in the second tier.

It is unlikely that Huddersfield and Portsmouth are the only clubs that have been alerted to the potential availability of Evans. Rovers will hope that a bidding war can start, ensuring they can receive as much money as possible for the sale.

It is still relatively early in the summer, and the Gas will know they have time to find a deal that suits them, as it seems highly likely that Evans will leave the club after three successful years.
