How long will patience last with O’Neil?

After doing a fantastic job to steer Wolves clear of danger last season, Gary O’Neil looked set to kick on with a full pre-season to prepare his side.

While the departures of Max Kilman and Pedro Neto were a blow, O’Neil was praised last term for putting together a side who were more than the sum of its parts.

A difficult run of fixtures has excused their poor start to the season, as they have met Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Liverpool in their opening six matches.

However, there is little sign of things getting easier as they visit Brentford and Brighton either side of a home clash with Manchester City.

There is genuine fear that Wolves will enter November without a league win. Their form throughout 2024 has already been dreadful, with only the three relegated sides and Nottingham Forest picking up fewer points from 1st January through to the end of last season.

Going into this weekend’s visit to Brentford, Wolves have lost 12 of their last 16 Premier League games. Their tail-off last term, following an FA Cup upset against Coventry, was understandable but that slump has carried over into this campaign.

Wolves have won once in the Premier League since the March international break, so O’Neil’s job may not be as safe as it appears.

His side are performing in line with their underlying stats, too. The club have scored six times from an expected goals tally of 5.5, which is the third-worst in the league. At the other end, only five sides have conceded more shots on target this term.

Home clashes with Crystal Palace, Southampton and Bournemouth in November offer hope of a turnaround. However, if O’Neil can’t inspire some kind of turnaround ahead of the visit of the champions, he might not last long enough to see their fixtures turn.

Brentford vs Wolves team news

Injuries are a key concern for both sides, with the pair having a combined 12 confirmed absentees ahead of Saturday’s encounter.

After losing Ivan Toney on deadline day, Brentford’s attacking options have been limited further with injuries to Igor Thiago and Yoane Wissa.

Those two are among seven players who have been ruled out for the hosts, with Josh DaSilva, Rico Henry, Aaron Hickey, Gustavo Nunes and Mathias Jensen also unavailable. Christian Norgaard could also miss out for the Bees.

Kevin Schade is expected to lead the line for the hosts, flanked by Bryan Mbeumo and Keane Lewis-Potter.

As for Wolves, they are hoping Craig Dawson can return to the starting line-up after missing last weekend’s defeat to Liverpool. However, the visitors will be without Sasa Kalajdzic, Bastien Meupiyou, Enso Gonzalez, Boubacar Traore and Yerson Mosquera.
